The business world nowadays and specifically the tech business world is something people view as a majorly male dominated part of society.
I was watching a keynote and a panel this morning on women in technology and it turned in the direction of women in business in general. Women are becoming more and more prevelent in business these days. In the white collar world it’s all about skills and less so about gender, race, sexual orientation. These things don’t make a great business person and help run a good business. At the end of the day a person’s personality and skills/knowledge make for a good business.
For lack of a better way to say this, does being a man or a woman, gay or straight, or whatever ethnicity someone is define whether or not that person is an asshole? No, this is based entirely on somebody’s personality and people skills. Having the right people will make for a better culture and a better business.
What does all of this have to do with a climb to success? At the end of the day, stop worrying about your gender. Stop worrying about your ethnicity. Stop worrying about your sexual orientation when you apply for a job. Instead focus your time on being someone who brings skills and knowledge to the table. Instead of worrying, read a book or take a class and take the right skills to the table.
Above all else. Don’t be an asshole.
