Know What You Don’t Know

Why are people too proud to admit when they don’t know something? This causes far more problems than it solves in our modern world of business and life. Information is always at the tips of your fingers in the smartphone age, there is truly no reason to be unable to admit when you don’t know something.

Humility is a characteristic that makes people more personable, and easier to get along with. The first step in humility is knowing what you don’t know. There is no shame in not knowing something. The true issue is being afraid to ask for help when you need it, whether you’re afraid to admit you don’t know something, or you’re afraid to ask for help. Trust me, asking for help will never make a leader or boss upset when you genuinely want to learn something, what will make them angry is when you can’t admit you don’t know and end up causing a much larger issue in the long run.

That’s enough of this rant for now, but there will be more posts to come soon.

You Don’t Get What You Want With Thoughts

“The universe does not give you what you want through thoughts. It gives you what you demand through actions.”

I love this quote in its entirety because it holds true in the lives of virtually everyone. Sure some people have gotten lucky, but the vast majority of us have to go out and work our tails off day in and day out to achieve what we want. So what is it you’re thinking about all the time that you want? What can you do to demand that thing from the universe? I promise it isn’t coming your way just by thinking about it, get out there and make it yours.

I’m still on vacation, but this quote just couldn’t wait until I got back.

Be In Control Part 1

Over the course of time countless motivators and authors have echoed this philosophy, if you’re not in control of your own life, you can’t get to where you want to be.

Sean Whalen is one the most memorable for me, with his writing about the Core 4 principle, meaning that you must be on control of your Power, Passion, Purpose, and Production. I think of this in a much more simplified way, so read on to find more.

Being in control doesn’t necessarily mean you have people who report to you in the business world, or children looking up to you. It doesn’t necessarily mean you manage anything external at all, the one thing you must be in control of is yourself. What does this mean though? There’s a few aspects of ourselves we can control on a daily, weekly, monthly basis, so we can start there.

Be in control of your body and mind. This sounds easy right? It isn’t. At the end of the day you control your body and mind, you control your workout routine, you control what information you take in, whether you sit around and watch TV or read a book. You control these things. Your body and mind are the most important things working for you on a daily basis, so if you don’t take care of them, how can you expect them to work the way you want them to for you? Would you put regular grade gas in a super high performance sports car, then leave it idling for hours? Probably not, but when you spend your days eating junk food and sitting around watching TV this is the way you’re treating your body. Think about that.

Control your mind. You control the information you consume on a daily basis, and unlike a computer your mind never fills up, you can keep adding more information. You can choose to binge watch your favorite Netflix series, or you can choose to read a book, listen to an audiobook, even watch educational content on YouTube or a good documentary. If we fill our minds with useful new information constantly, these seeds of information will grow into a wealth of knowledge over time. If you fill your mind with nothing but TV then that’s the knowledge you’ll gain, but if you watch/read educational or field related content then in turn that knowledge will grow.

Being in control doesn’t mean doing these things when you feel like it either, you have to make these things habitual and consistent. You can’t diet and exercise 2 days a week and expect great results. You also can’t watch TV for hours a day 5 days a week and read a couple chapters of a book on the weekend. You need to be consistent and help yourself develop these habits and grow.

Let’s work on mastering our bodies and minds and I’ll be back soon with part 2. If you can do this, that’s another step forward on your Climb to Success.

Stop Chasing the Money & Start Chasing the Passion

“Stop Chasing the Money and Start Chasing the Passion.”  I honestly can’t remember who said this originally, but this quote resonates with me personally.  I have a full-time job that I love, and put many hours into, because I love it.  I also write this blog to help all of you find your climb to success.  I don’t do this for the money, I do this because of the passion.  I love to help people, and being able to write and have all of you out there read it also gives me a creative outlet.  If what I write here helps one of you to find what you want in life and go get it, then I truly have accomplished what I set out to do.

Finding your passion, rather than just working for the dollars allows you to work harder than ever, and to have a true sense of accomplishment as you complete even the smallest tasks, because these goals contribute to you hitting your overall goals.  If you find something that makes you truly happy and fulfilled, find a career that revolves around that, dedicate yourself to it whether full-time or on the side, and I promise it will be much easier to put the hours into this passion, than it is to put your hours into just earning a paycheck.

If you enjoy this content, I hope you share this with those around you so that I can help as many people as possible.  If you have comments you’d like to share, or would like to put your own spin on these ideas, you can contact me at alan@climbtosuccess.ca
